In the world of hair artistry, the technique of balayage has become more and more popular. Even if you have never tried balayage yourself, there is a good chance that you have either heard about it from your stylist or seen it advertised on your salon’s website. Most people are aware of balayage, but they aren’t quite sure what exactly it is. In today’s post, we will provide you with a more in-depth look at the balayage technique to help you determine whether or not you want to give it a shot!

What Is Balayage?

Balayage is a specific way of dying your hair that results in soft, sun-kissed highlights that look much more natural than the ombre technique. Instead of your hair making a drastic change from light to dark, balayage gives you a more subtle transition. Unlike other techniques of hair dying, balayage requires the stylist to hand-paint strategic sections of your hair, as opposed to wrapping large sections together in foil.

The best thing about balayage is that it can easily be applied to a number of different styles. Depending on the salon, some stylists may incorporate some type of balayage into almost 90% of their dye jobs.

The Pros and Cons of Balayage

As with any hair trend, technique, or style, there are various pros and cons that you will want to take into account if you are considering trying something new. Balayage, of course, is no exception. However, most people find that the pros of this technique far outweigh the cons.

Pros

One of the main benefits of the balayage technique is that it grows out naturally, meaning upkeep is very minimal. With some techniques, it becomes quite obvious when your hair is growing out due to the dramatic change of color at the roots. However, with balayage, your stylist will try to match the darker color of your roots with your hair color, and gently have it fade into a lighter color. As a result, you won’t have to receive touchups as often as with highlights, and if you decide you want to let your hair grow out, you won’t have to worry about your roots!

In addition to the minimal upkeep, balayage has the added benefit of being a great style for all hair types! Unfortunately, some styles will only look good if you have a certain length of hair. Balayage, on the other hand, is extremely versatile, meaning your stylist can apply it to almost all hair types and lengths!

Cons

Balayage is a great way to enhance your current style or go for a whole new look. Unfortunately, the one downside to balayage is that it is not effective in covering up grey hair. Your stylist can use balayage to blend grey hairs into the rest of your hair, but if you have more than a few grey hairs, then you may have to come in for monthly touchups or receive a root tint prior to the appointment when you will receive balayage.

If you are someone who has a busy schedule and doesn’t have a lot of time to spare to get your hair done, then balayage may not be for you. This style of dye takes more time to complete than others due to the fact that your stylist will hand-paint each strand they will dye. While this is not necessarily a drawback, it can be less appealing if you don’t have very much time. Your stylist will be able to give you a more accurate assessment as to how long balayage will take, so make sure to ask if it is something that you would like to consider.
