What Are Fusion Hair Extensions?

Many hair extension application methods begin with long sections of hair known as wefts. For these application methods, your stylist will attach the weft of hair to your head using a variety of different methods, such as sewing, beads, and more. However, fusion extensions are applied a little differently.

Instead of starting with long wefts of hair, fusion extensions come in small strands that are individually attached to your head. Another difference between fusion extensions and other hair application methods is that fusion hair extensions are available in either hot or cold varieties, which refers to how they are attached to your head.

Hot vs. Cold

When you choose fusion hair extensions, your stylist may recommend either the hot or the cold fusion method. Both of these methods apply the extensions strand-by-strand. However, as you can imagine, hot fusion extensions are applied using heat, and cold fusion extensions are applied without a heating element.

Hot Fusion

Hot fusion hair extensions come in a variety of lengths, and each strand within the package comes with one end that is tipped with a keratin bond in a u-shape. Those who frequent the salon are most likely familiar with keratin products, as it is often used to smooth and strengthen dry or damaged hair.

Because your hair is naturally made up of keratin proteins, the keratin tip of the hot fusion hair extensions makes a healthier alternative to glue, resulting in less damage to your natural hair. In order to apply the hot fusion hair extensions, your stylist will first section off your hair and then place a plastic separator around the strand. Once your hair is separated, the stylist will place the u-shaped tip of the hair extension underneath the strand and use the heated fusion tool to heat up the keratin bond. From there, your stylist will roll the now malleable bond to fuse it with your natural hair!

Cold Fusion

Cold fusion hair extensions are also known as micro-link or i-tip extensions. When applied, cold fusion hair extensions are applied strand-by-strand, but they aren’t applied using heat. Instead, the cold fusion extensions are applied by weaving small sections of your natural hair into a small, micro-link bead. When the hair the threaded through the bead, the stylist will use pliers to clamp down the bead, securing the extension to your hair.

The Benefits of Hot and Cold Fusion Extensions

Fusion hair extensions are a great option for almost all hair types, but one of the best benefits you can experience when you choose this type of extension is the amount of time they last between appointments. Most hair extensions can go six to eight weeks before you need to schedule an appointment at the salon to have them moved up closer to your scalp. However, hot fusion extensions last anywhere from two to four months before they need to be replaced.

Additionally, with fusion hair extensions you can style, wash, and color your hair just like you normally would! You will also be able to put your hair in up-dos without the risk of some of your extensions showing through, which is not always the case for some types of extensions.
